Providing ecotherapy or nature therapy for residents in California wanting to learn mindfulness techniques

nature based therapy

I use outside therapy for clients who are feeling over connected and overwhelmed to feeling more grounded with yourself and the world.

Ecotherapy is more than just having outside therapy. Do you remember being a kid and not thinking twice about dipping your toes in the stream, sticking your hands in the dirt, or climbing a tree? There was a connection you had with nature that you may or may not have realized, but now that has changed.  As an adult you might spend your days connected to your phone, the computer screen, the newest app, social media, and the constant stream of bad and then worse news.  The stress of our fast paced world is a lot - and exhausting.

Ecotherapy or nature based therapy is a way to change that. Through ecotherapy I can help you disconnect from the overwhelm of the world and connect back to yourself. Whether it’s going for a hike through the local parks, sitting next to a tree, or even just walking through our urban streets and noticing what stands out to you, outside therapy in nature can help you recenter yourself.

how nature based therapy
can help

When we connect with nature, our body naturally becomes in-tune with the rhythms of nature.  Through nature based therapy we are able to slow down and notice what’s around us and most importantly what’s within us.

During outside therapy sessions with me we’ll meet in a local park and you’ll learn how to connect not only with yourself, but with nature. Nature based therapy can help with decreasing those loud voices in your head that say you aren’t good enough, the existential crisis that is asking “what’s the point of all this?” and the ongoing stress that is felt in your day-to-day life.

I currently offer outdoor nature therapy sessions in Marin County.

Nature is for all bodies and people.

You don’t have to feel so disconnected from the world.

You can feel mindful and present in your life.

Being in nature has been shown to lower anxiety, reduce stress, blood pressure, heart rate, and the production of stress hormones.

Hi, I’m Emily, I provide nature based therapy in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Providing outside therapy is one of the favorite parts of my work. Growing up, getting lost in the woods was one of my favorite ways to connect with myself and the earth. Being in nature is particularly healing for individuals who identify as highly sensitive because it can help our body slow down. I provide LGBTQ+ affirming therapy and have a focus in working with highly sensitive people, but also work with a variety of folks who feel like outside therapy could be supportive.

faqs about nature based therapy

+ What does an in-person nature based therapy session look like?

From the trailhead we find a quiet space to walk and set an intention for your session. We might spend the session walking, or often times we might pause and find a spot to sit. During the session we'll reflect on our surroundings and notice the metaphors that nature is showing us. We'll talk about what is present in your life in that moment and see the ways that we can connect with nature with those challenges. At the end of session, it might feel like we just took a walk in the woods and got fresh air. It might also feel like you found a connection with the earth that you didn't see or feel before.

+ Who does nature based therapy benefit?

Anyone and everyone. There is so much research out there on the healing benefits of nature, and so no matter what is bringing you to therapy ecotherapy can support you.

+ How do you incorporate outside therapy into online sessions?

I incorporate ecotherapy into online sessions in a variety of ways. For people where nature is accessible, you might be able to sit outside with your phone or computer during our session. In this way we can move through a more traditional ecotherapy session - noticing the movement and sounds of nature around you.

If it isn't accessible to be outside, then we can bring nature inside. Some practices we might do are finding nature objects that are meaningful to you and bringing those inside, cultivating plants in your home, gardening, listening to nature sounds, and even just the act of looking at nature images are all ways we can bring nature into our work together.

+ How long are nature based sessions?

Both indoor and outdoor ecotherapy sessions are 60 minutes long.

I currently hold outdoor therapy sessions in Marin County parks.
